Differential Diagnosis of Lacrimal Gland Neoplasms

Less than 50% are epithelial in origin; most are   lymphoproliferative
50% of epithelial tumors of lacrimal gland are pleomorphic   adenomas (benign mixed cell tumors [BMT])
50% of epithelial tumors are malignant, and of these, 50%   are adenoid cystic carcinomas
A biopsy of BMT (pleomorphic adenomas) should not be   performed —  remove intact in capsule
Neoplasms — globular masses on imaging   Inflammatory/lymphoid lesions — diffuse expansion of   gland
