This division treats disorders of the retina, vitreous, and macula, including inherited retinal diseases and dystrophies (for example, retinitis pigmentosa), age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, simple and complex retinal detachment, trauma, and retinopathy of prematurity. The Center for Macular Degeneration Treatment and Research offers patients the latest advances in clinical care and support, and is dedicated to developing new treatments for degenerative retinal disease, including retinal cell transplantation. Several important clinical trials will be initiated to test the efficacy of different alternatives for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration and other disorders. This service, equipped with the latest laser units and vitreoretinal surgical devices, also operates a full-service electrophysiology diagnostic unit. All current vitreoretinal surgical techniques, including gas, silicone oil, and heavier-than-water liquid devices, are used. Active clinical research programs in macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy ensure patients the most up-to-date eye care. |
