The core functions of CIHI are:

• Identifying health information needs and priorities
• Collecting, processing and maintaining data for a comprehensive and growing number of health databases and registries, covering health human resources, health services and health expenditures
• Setting national standards for financial, statistical and clinical data as well as standards for health informatics/telematics
• Producing and disseminating value-added analysis

Objectives:

• Serve as a mental health resource centre for the province at large
• Support the development of Self-help groups and other community mental health initiatives
• Speak out on mental health concerns in the media
• Provide mental health and illness education in communities, schools, workplaces and professional training programs
• Advocate for improvements in the mental health care system
• Partner with other community groups and government to address major issues such as poverty and unemployment

The core business of the Provincial Office is knowledge enhancement through the development and distribution of information to a wide variety of mental health stakeholders, including local branches, consumers/ survivors and family members, policy makers and leaders and the media.

• Support to Ontario Division branches and the mental health field
• Policy development and analysis
• Advocacy

Objectives:

• Advance the discipline of nursing in the interest of the public
• Advocate for public policy that incorporates the principles of primary health care and respects the principles, conditions and spirit of the Canada Health Act
• Advance the regulation of Registered Nurses in the interest of the public
• Work in collaboration with nurses, other health-care providers, health system stakeholders and the public to achieve and sustain quality practice environments and positive client outcomes
• Advance international health policy and development in Canada and abroad to support global health and equity
• Promote awareness of the nursing profession so that the roles and expertise of Registered Nurses are understood, respected and optimized within the health system

In addition, the Canadian Play Therapy Institute provides training and in-service education in a number of mental health topics including child psychotherapy and play therapy as well as child abuse and other mental health issues for staff and the public at the request of agencies, institutions and facilities throughout the world with programs geared specifically to the requirements of the host institution. Providing a strong, collective voice for psychiatrists across the country, the CPA serves to maintain a community dedicated to ensuring the highest possible standard of professional practice in providing psychiatric services to Canadians.

On behalf of its members, the CPA provides leadership and support for affiliated provincial psychiatric associations and organizations through advocacy, the development of professional standards, scientific publications, medical psychiatric education, and the promotion of research.

• Improve the quality of medical practice in the drug and alcohol field through:
  • Establishment and promotion of standards of clinical practice
  • Fostering and promotion of research

• Promote professional and public awareness of the roles that physicians can play in the prevention and treatment of alcohol and drug related problems
• Foster and promote of further development of programs for the prevention and treatment of problems of alcohol and drug use in physicians
• Contribute to professional and public examination and discussion of important issues in the drug and alcohol field

CSAM provides Certification in Addiction Medicine for physicians.

CSBBCS seeks to develop and maintain effective lines of communication with the major federal and provincial funding agencies and science ministries with a view to influencing science policy and funding in Canada, particularly with respect to experimental psychology and behavioural neuroscience. We also seek to promote the value of research in experimental psychology and behavioural neuroscience in the eyes of the general public through the popular and scientific press and other public venues, and to increase communication within our own research community by means of newsletters, electronic networks, and an annual meeting. We have already begun to advocate on behalf of funding for basic science, which is in serious jeopardy in Canada (as elsewhere). It has joined the National Consortium of Scientific and Educational Societies, and plan to participate actively in their efforts to inform and influence the public, Government and granting councils.
