About:

GLMA is an organization of 1,800 lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) physicians, medical students and their supporters from all 50 states and 12 countries. Since its founding in 1981, as the American Association of Physicians for Human Rights, GLMA has been dedicated to combating homophobia in the medical profession and in society at large, as well as promoting the best possible health care for lesbigay patients.

GLMA works closely with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, medical societies, top government officials, local health departments, community groups, the health care industry, the media and other opinion leaders to help shape policy that meets the needs of our communities. Our members are on the front lines of AIDS treatment, prevention, and policy, as well as lesbian and gay-related health issues. As a lesbian and gay physicians' organization, GLMA plays a critically important role in bridging medicine and the LGBT movement, and is uniquely credible and effective in advocating for our communities.

GLMA provides a rich source of personal and professional support for its members, nearly half of whom are women and/or physicians of color. Through our newsletters, periodic member alerts, annual membership directory, receptions, and special projects, we offer a wealth of opportunities for networking and community building. Our annual Women in Medicine conference and our Annual Symposium are especially popular.
