About: | The Institute for Healthcare Communication [IHC] (formerly the Miles, and then the Bayer Institute for Health Care Communication) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of health care by improving communication between clinician and patient through three activities: education, research and advocacy.
The Institute's first efforts began in 1987. Since that time over 9,000 workshops have been conducted for more than 120,000 clinicians. Grants have been made to investigators to develop new knowledge about clinician-patient communication. Outcome studies have been conducted to map the impact of the Institute's programs. The Institute stresses the concept that effective communication between clinician and patient is a necessity, not an option. It works with health care organizations to conduct research and provide educational opportunities to make it possible for clinicians to develop the communication skills they need to be effective. IHC does not offer workshops directly, but rather presents them through other sponsoring healthcare organizations. |
