Menninger provides a breadth of services and programs unavailable in any other setting. Independent national surveys rank these programs for adults, children, and adolescents among the best in the country.

Menninger is an internationally recognized training center for mental health professionals. More than 170 active faculty members teach in the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry & Mental Health Sciences, the Topeka Institute for Psychoanalysis, and other Menninger training programs. Supporting these efforts are a preeminent professional library with over 45,000 books and journals in psychiatry and mental health sciences and videotaping and audiovisual facilities.

MHAM defines its critical issues as:

Over 400 full time and part time employees provide a wide range of services at 45 sites and for more than 8,000 people each year.

MHE-SME is in official relations with the World Health Organisation - Regional Office for Europe, has consultative status with the Council of Europe and has a liaison function for Mental Health Promotion with the European Commission. It collaborates regularly with the work of members of the European Parliament.

Objectives:

• Promote and support MHE-SME member organisations through information, exchange and consultation
• Find partner organisations for collaboration and for exchange of knowledge and expertise and identify good practices
• Support national, regional and local member organisations with their developments and their struggle for acknowledgement and funding
• Provide a forum for exchange and information on health and social policies in the mental health field
• Develop and formulate policies and strategies on mental health issues
• Lobby European institutions in order to raise the profile of mental health
• Increase awareness for mental health and campaign on important mental health issues (hence playing an important role in raising awareness and in combating the taboos, stigma and prejudice associated with mental illness)

Objectives:

• Provide a forum for the presentation and exchange of ideas about best ways of ensuring high quality mental health services for people seriously affected by mental illness and disability
• Promote positive attitudes about mental health and mental illness
• Provide a forum for professional development of people associated with mental health services, i.e. an opportunity to present current innovations, strategies, research, policies and future directions
• Provide a forum for professionals, consumers, carers and managers to meet and debate mental health services
• Stimulate debate which will challenge the boundaries of present knowledge and ideas about services for people with mental health disabilities

MHWWB shares knowledge and ideas about psychosocial assistance for natural and man-made disasters, mental health and human rights, and treatment and psychosocial rehabilitation for people with severe mental illness. Its primary focus is primarily, although not solely, on the needs of developing countries. MHWWB encourages family- and community-based, psychosocial approaches to mental health problems, respectful of cultural variation, drawing on local resources and healing traditions, and emphasizing community revitalization and empowerment as well as individual treatment. MHWWB is a loose network of individuals, not a membership organization. It does not provide or organize direct assistance in disaster situations as an organization, although individuals associated with MHWWB have participated in such activities and have provided consultative services with respect to disasters, psychosocial rehabilitation programs, and the like.

This workshop will offer strategies for motivating parents to take effective benevolent action and encouraging teenagers to once again work within their family system. It will expand the therapist’s range of interventions that can empower parents and focus on how to disrupt the painful aggressive emotional dilemmas of teenagers.

Step-by-step guidelines will help professionals to set clear goals, bolster the parents’ capacity to set limits, help distressed youths to reclaim their childhoods and defuse the immediate crisis so that underlying family dynamics can be addressed. Symptoms such as suicidality, violence, school failure, substance abuse and teens caught in divorce conflicts will be addressed.

This workshop will demonstrate the need for both kindness and authority when working with youthful aggression, failure and high risk behavior with a specific sense of purpose.

Objectives:

• Principles of Brief Directive Therapy with aggressive adolescents
• Accurately assess the level of danger and need for protection
• Assess and intervene in family and parental patterns that support aggression and other serious symptoms
• Reverse the cycle of mutual intimidation by adults and adolescents
• Learn specific interventions for helping parents regain the benevolent leadership of their families
• Learn methods for engaging teens in the process when possible
• Help teenagers relinquish painful control and self-destructive behaviors so they can enjoy the remainder of their youth
• Learn specific strategies for change including, The Secret Weapon, The Tao Strategy, and The Pawnbroker
