About: | Mental Health Workers without Borders [MHWWB] is an international, not-for profit, non-governmental network of activist psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, psychiatric nurses, counselors, and other mental health workers.
MHWWB shares knowledge and ideas about psychosocial assistance for natural and man-made disasters, mental health and human rights, and treatment and psychosocial rehabilitation for people with severe mental illness. Its primary focus is primarily, although not solely, on the needs of developing countries. MHWWB encourages family- and community-based, psychosocial approaches to mental health problems, respectful of cultural variation, drawing on local resources and healing traditions, and emphasizing community revitalization and empowerment as well as individual treatment. MHWWB is a loose network of individuals, not a membership organization. It does not provide or organize direct assistance in disaster situations as an organization, although individuals associated with MHWWB have participated in such activities and have provided consultative services with respect to disasters, psychosocial rehabilitation programs, and the like. |

Brief Treatment with Challenging Adolescents
"Strategies for working with the high risk adolescent and the family" (Kindly refer to the meeting's Web pages.) August 30-September 1, 2012 Palo Alto, CA Sponsored by: Mental Research Institute [MRI] Out-of-control adolescents and pre-adolescents are often brought in for therapy by parents who act like weary war veterans. The youth come in with certainty about their current choices regardless of how self-destructive they’ve become. This workshop will offer strategies for motivating parents to take effective benevolent action and encouraging teenagers to once again work within their family system. It will expand the therapist’s range of interventions that can empower parents and focus on how to disrupt the painful aggressive emotional dilemmas of teenagers. Step-by-step guidelines will help professionals to set clear goals, bolster the parents’ capacity to set limits, help distressed youths to reclaim their childhoods and defuse the immediate crisis so that underlying family dynamics can be addressed. Symptoms such as suicidality, violence, school failure, substance abuse and teens caught in divorce conflicts will be addressed. This workshop will demonstrate the need for both kindness and authority when working with youthful aggression, failure and high risk behavior with a specific sense of purpose. Objectives:
