Detail:

MAOIs Master Course and Mentorship
(You can consult the meeting's Web pages.)

June 9, 2012

New York, NY

Event sponsor: Neuroscience Education Institute [NEI]

This symposium addresses treating patients with resistant depression, with emphasis on the largely underutilized monoamine oxidase inhibitors [MAOIs]. No longer emphasized in medical education, there is misinformation about MAOI dietary and drug interactions. This course uses lecture and case examples to help participants integrate these agents into clinical practice. In course 2, participants have an opportunity to get feedback on treatment-resistant depression cases in a session dedicated to assessment and guidance of participant-submitted cases.

The following unmet needs and professional practice gaps regarding depression were revealed following a critical analysis of activity feedback, expert faculty assessment, and literature review, as well as through new medical knowledge:

  • The timely detection, diagnosis, and treatment of major depression have been shown to increase the probability of positive clinical outcomes; however, only 60% of those with depression are actually being treated
  • Even when correctly diagnosed and treated, as many as two-thirds of MDD patients will not respond to the first antidepressant prescribed, and a substantial number may be treatment-resistant
  • In a 2012 NEI Survey, only half of respondents felt competent prescribing an MAOI to patients with treatment-resistant depression

To help address clinician performance deficits with respect to diagnosis and treatment of depression, quality improvement efforts need to provide education regarding under-used evidence-based treatment strategies for patients with treatment-resistant depression.

Objectives:

  • Explain the role of monoamine oxidase in the neurobiology, etiology, and presentation of psychiatric illnesses, including depression
  • Identify foods and medications that interact with MAO inhibitors
  • Implement safe management strategies when switching between MAO inhibitors and serotonin reuptake inhibitors
  • Integrate MAO inhibitors into clinical practice according to best practices standards

Faculty:

    • Stephen M Stahl, MD, PhD, Adjunct Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of California, San Diego School of Medicine; Honorary Visiting Senior Fellow, University of Cambridge, UK

Core Beliefs on Trial
"A Cognitive Therapy Approach for Psychopharmacologists"

( Refer to the meeting's Web pages.)

June 28-30, 2012

Carlsbad, CA

Event sponsored by: Neuroscience Education Institute [NEI]

This workshop trains participants in Trial-Based Cognitive Therapy [TBCT]— a three-level, three-phase, case formulation method. TBCT has a unique approach that makes it a distinct intervention in modifying patients' core beliefs, especially those about the self.

Objectives:

  • Explain the cognitive model to patients, using TBCT cognitive conceptualization diagram, so patients understand the relation between situation, thought, emotion and behavior/physical reaction
  • Use intra-personal thought record so patients are confident implementing its use in session
  • Improve patients' ambivalence toward the relevant topic using consensual role-play
  • Use Trial I to reduce a patient's mean percentage of the negative core belief and emotion by at least 60%
  • Use Trial II to teach patients the metacognitive character of their thoughts and beliefs
  • Use responsibility grid with patients facing events that produce feelings of guilt

Trainers:

    • Irismar Reis de Oliveira, MD, PhD, Professor of Psychiatry, Department of Neurosciences and Mental Health, Post-Graduation Program, Professor Edgar Santos University Hospital, Federal University of Bahia, Salvador, Brazil
    • Donna Sudak, MD , Founding Fellow, Academy of Cognitive Therapy; President, Academy of Cognitive Therapy; Director, Psychotherapy Training; Professor of Psychiatry, Drexel University College of Medicine
