About:

All Older persons who have, or are at risk of developing mental problems should have available to them and their family caregivers, specialized services which are readily accessible and provided in the least restrictive environment, allowing them to maintain their individual independent functioning.

Despite the seriousness of the problem the federal government and state mental health programs have not yet adequately addressed it to this day.

That leaves the older persons with mental health needs with the necessity of addressing this issue directly by forming into an effective national advocacy and education organization and is the reason for the establishment of the Older Adult Consumers Mental Health Alliance [OACMHA].

Objectives:

  • Decrease fear in older persons of mental health stigma by increasing public awareness and knowledge of the special mental health needs and problems of older persons, including alternative solutions and approaches to services and treatments needed by this population group
  • Promote the development and implementation of non-traditional mental health prevention, early intervention and treatment programs that specifically target older persons
  • Support an expedited mental health and aging research agenda and development of a national database of mental health services for older adults
  • Promote the increase in the specialized professional workforce needed to provide age-sensitive mental health services to older persons
  • Develop and distribute culturally sensitive information about accessing community mental health services for older persons
