About:	Parents of Autistic Children [POAC] is a non-profit group that seeks to strengthen the capacity of the Autistic Community (family, friends, professionals, paraprofessionals, legislators, groups and organizations) to meet the developmental and health related needs of children and adults who exhibit characteristics of PDD (Pervasive Developmental Disorder), autism or related disorders. Through such strengthening, POAC strives to assist those affected in achieving their individual potential for a happy, healthy, productive life and to preserve this quality of life at a manageable cost to all. Intentions Community education: Promoting public awareness of early warning signs, so as to enable the earliest possible diagnosis/intervention Educating medical professionals and paraprofessionals: To recognize the signs of autism and the importance of early diagnosis, along with the risks of delaying the appropriate referrals Collaboration with the medical community, health providers and programs servicing young children (daycare, preschool, public schools) to ensure accurate and early identification of children with Autism and related disorders Increase awareness of support systems and training for families: To enable them to function as well-informed partners and advocates, promoting the inclusion of families in the decision-making process Increased awareness of options for individualized and comprehensive services designed to meet the needs of children and family, to include potential opportunities for inclusion with support and training available to staff and families to ensure success Promote evaluation and assessment across disciplines in order to identify the individual needs and provide appropriate intervention Assisting with locating available therapies and programs with adequate funding and well-trained staff Lobbying and educating appropriate legislators and government officials to ensure all families will have access to appropriate supports and services regardless of personal financial status Coordinate with other available community resources (both formal and informal) to provide continuous services, easier accessibility, and enhanced community awareness and support Develop and maintain a BI-monthly newsletter, host periodic conventions and seminars to provide a forum for the exchange of information by all persons interested in promoting ideas set forth above.
