The Perth Association for Mental Health [PAMH] is a voluntary organisation, formed in October 1981, whose members are concerned about people who have mental health problems.

Its aims are:

  • To promote mental health
  • To promote the general understanding of mental ill health
  • To spread information on the facilities and services available within the community for those with mental health problems and others affected by mental ill health
  • To provide services in the community to complement those offered by statutory organisations like the Health Board and Social Work Department
  • To increase the understanding of the problems of people who have suffered mental illness

PAMH provides staff to run Day Activities, which are made up of structured sessions, four afternoons a week, one evening and one afternoon social session. Structured sessions include Arts Crafts, Social Skills, Practical Cookery Baking, and discussion group relating to Health Issues.

Invited speakers contribute to the programme of these groups.

In addition PAMH:

  • Runs a Personal Support Group for those who feel depressed, offering structured discussion, acceptance and understanding
  • Has a fact bank/information library providing books and leaflets on issues around mental illness and mental health
  • Runs Assertiveness Courses
  • Runs other support groups, both time limited and open-ended, responding to need
  • Arranges talks, discussions and training workshops which increase the flow of information, raises topical issues and contributes towards the campaign for better services
  • Provides a Meeting Place for other organisations with similar aims - a separate list of User Groups is available
  • Offers individual Counselling
  • Runs a Befriending Scheme
