June 25-29, 2012 Eastham, Cape Cod, MA Event sponsor: Professional Learning Network [PLN] With one in 110 children diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum disorder, psychologists, social workers, school counselors, behavioral consultants, pediatricians, and Early Childhood specialists are increasingly encountering children on the spectrum in their work. There is considerable disagreement about how to treat these children. It is a daunting task to learn about the range of treatments, their relationships to 'non autism specific' treatments, and to determine what would most benefit a particular child at a given time for a specific challenge. Through lecture, discussion and extensive video illustrations this workshop will provide an overview and in-depth look at the state of the art of evidence-based standard and innovative treatments for young children and adolescents with ASD. The workshop will cover commonalities, differences, strengths and limitations across treatments, and the integration of autism treatment with treatment approaches used for other disorders. This workshop also presents treatments for common comorbid challenges and diagnoses, including anxiety, mood disorders, depression, and behavioral problems (e.g. Positive Behavioral Supports, specialized FBAs and Replays) as well as adaptations of treatments for typically developing children (e.g. Play Therapy; CBT). The course proceeds developmentally with the first 3 days focused on early and middle childhood and the last 2 on later childhood and adolescence.
