The False Self
"The Complexity of Body Image and Identity Issues in the Treatment of Eating Disorders"

(Kindly refer to the meeting's Web pages.)

May 11, 2012

Princeton, Mercer County, NJ

Event sponsor: Renfrew Center Foundation

Body image is perhaps the least understood and most complex of the core issues associated with eating disorder treatment. As an integral part of the life cycle, body image development shifts and adapts as we age and engage in life experiences. It is ironic, and adds to the difficulty of treatment, that our clients are focused on and obsessed with their bodies yet are virtually disconnected from experiencing their own bodies.

This seminar will address the intricate interplay between brain, body and beliefs (why we believe what we believe). Repetition of messages and experiences over time become internalized and influence not only self-perception and self-talk, but the body itself. Negative reinforcement often becomes so familiar that it feels “true” and, thus, is taken on by the client as her identity and imprinted in her bodymind.

Attendees will learn body-focused strategies designed to help the client reclaim her “authentic” self and recover connection to her body. This seminar will utilize lecture, demonstration and experiential exercises, and video clips of work with clients. Additionally, a resource packet will be provided.

Presenter: Adrienne Ressler, MA, LMSW, CEDS.

Relapse and Recovery
"Integrating Inner Wisdom Practices into Current Treatment Paradigms"

(Please refer to the meeting's Web pages.)

May 11, 2012

Arlington, VA

Event sponsor: Renfrew Center Foundation

Eating disorder recovery is often a long, complicated, dynamic process of transformation and growth. It can also be a life-affirming journey when guided by one’s ‘inner wisdom,’ those unshakable truths buried deep within.

This seminar provides a unique opportunity for participants to delve into eating disorder recovery by exploring emerging paradigms and innovative treatment approaches through both didactic and experiential methods. Recent research and the narratives of recovering women reveal promising new treatment directions and offer rich clinical insights, including the often neglected spiritual domain.

Central to this seminar is a safe, nurturing ‘healing circle’ for participants to explore a variety of practices and techniques for re-establishing connections with their ‘inner wisdom.’ Through text material, breathing exercises, guided imagery, journaling and daily meditations, the healing circle experience expands participants’ appreciation for blending spiritual approaches into current treatment paradigms for attaining long-term recovery. Instruments for monitoring and evaluating various aspects of recovery will be provided.

Presenter: Marjorie Feinson, PhD.
