The Society of Hospital Medicine [SHM] was founded in 1998 as the ]National Association of Inpatient Physicians [NAIP). SHM is the only medical society devoted entirely to hospitalists (physicians whose primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients) and to the hospital medicine movement. The over 6,000 members of SHM are involved in patient care, teaching, research, and leadership related to hospital medicine.

Activities:

  • Provides continuing education, and industry updates
  • Conducts surveys, prepares written analyses and provides discussion forums that define the specialty of hospital medicine as it continues to evolve
  • Develops policy and position statements addressing our shared concerns and issues
  • Advocates on behalf of hospital medicine before other medical societies as well as government and regulatory agencies
