To achieve this aim the Centre works to influence national policy and practice through a co-ordinated programme of research, service development and training. It works closely with local services to assess needs, develop services, train practitioners and undertake research. The Centre is also committed to identifying good local practice and disseminating it nationally through an extensive programme of conferences and publications, its web site and its training activities.

The objectives of the San Diego Psychiatric Society include advancing and improving care for persons with mental illness through public information, education and awareness programs and material.

The purpose of SDSSTE is to bring together professionals in the fields of sex education, sex therapy, and sex research to foster the interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge related to sexuality. Balanced attention is given to all aspects of sex therapy and education.

It is not a requirement of Society membership that a person be licensed in any profession or possess any standard of professional expertise or experience, or engage in any particular profession. Not all occupations in the health care field in California require professional licenses. Therefore, some members of the Society are licensed and/or practicing as professionals, and other members are not.

Sandplay is an expressive play therapy tool used by children, adolescents, adults, families, couples and groups. Miniature images, sand and water are used in a tray of sand to create patterns, worlds and/or dramatic play processes. The sandplay process promotes self-expression, shared visions and community with others.

Sandtray Network objectives are to:

• Promote the many different ways of using the sandtray
• Support the use of the sandtray for the benefit of the community at large
• Compile a resource library
• Disseminate information about sandtray methods
• Implement the use of sandtray in a wide variety of settings
• Explore the use of the sandtray as an interpersonal communication tool to bridge ethnic and cross-cultural barriers

• Why scale up coverage of effective and affordable care for mental disorders?
  • The public health importance of mental disorders: what is the burden and impact of mental disorders and their relationship with other health conditions?
  • The social determinants of mental disorders: how are social factors such as poverty, gender inequity and violence associated with the risk for mental disorders?
  • The effective treatments of mental disorders: what is the evidence on drug and psychosocial treatments for specific mental disorders, particularly from developing countries where there are few specialist mental health resources
  • The barriers for scaling up effective treatments for mental disorders: what are the major barriers which need to be addressed when scaling up services, for example: stigma, lack of human resources, mental hospitals which institutionalize persons with mental disorders, the lack of mental health leadership etc
• How to scale up coverage for specific mental disorders
  • Integrating the management of common mental disorders (depressive and anxiety disorders) and alcohol use disorders in primary care: training will be based on the collaborative stepped care model, currently being implemented in the Manas project in Goa, India, the largest trial of its kind in the developing world
  • Community based management of serious mental disorders: training will be based on the Ashagram model evaluated in the rural district of Barwani in Madhya Pradesh, India, currently being evaluated in a clinical trial in Goa and Chennai, and will cover the detection and management of psychoses
  • Management of child mental disorders: training will be based on a community based model to improve the detection of and interventions for developmental disabilities and child mental disorders through pre-school and school systems
• The leadership skills for scaling up
  • Monitoring and evaluation of programs and setting benchmarks or targets for mental health programs
  • Advocacy to challenge stigma and championing the human rights of people with mental disorders
  • Implementing public health interventions for school mental health promotion and prevention of alcohol abuse and suicide

SMES-Europa is concerned with the intersection of social exclusion and mental health. Exclusion is a structural phenomenon of society and constitutes a political challenge for all of Europe. Loneliness, sickness, mental illness, drug abuse and alcoholism may be the cause or the results of this state of alienation and exclusion from society, which in some cases may be irreversible and which could eventually lead to a complete break with society. SMES-Europa calls for a new political European program built within a framework of a Europe of Citizenship and Solidarity.

Membership in SMES-Europa includes organizations and individuals. Its activities include international conferences.
