About:

The Arizona Telemedicine Program is a multidisciplinary clinical program of The University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. The program was created in 1996 at the initiation of the Arizona legislature to establish pilot projects demonstrating the efficacy of telemedicine in delivering better health care to Arizona's medically underserved rural areas.

Specifically, the Arizona legislature funded an eight site Arizona Rural Telemedicine Network as a general appropriation to The University of Arizona Health Sciences Center's operating budget. The Arizona legislature defines telemedicine as the use of computers, video imaging, fiber optics and telecommunications for diagnosis and treatment of persons in rural, geographically isolated communities and state institutions.

The program's goals are to demonstrate how telemedicine can improve rural health care in Arizona, particularly with the rising costs of health care leading to closure of critically needed hospitals and clinics in rural Arizona communities, and to offer a cost-effective alternative to expensive transportation and time delays for outside referrals from Arizona Department of Corrections institutions.

Mental Health Film Series - Frames of Mind
(You can refer to the meeting's Web pages.)

May 16, 2012

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Sponsored by: University of British Columbia [UBC], Department of Psychiatry

“Spider” (2002, directed by David Cronenberg)

Dennis Clegg was nicknamed “Spider” during childhood because of a fascination with arachnids. After thirty years in a facility for the mentally ill, he is released to an East End London halfway house, where he receives little care or attention from the landlady. Unsupervised and off his medication, he starts revisiting his childhood haunts, and reliving his lonely working-class boyhood as the only son of a hard-drinking plumber and his subdued wife. Disturbing memories of his father’s attempts to replace his mother in the household with a blousy, blonde seductress confuse Spider and threaten his (perhaps delusion) grasp on the past, and he spirals into fresh madness.

Presenters:

    • Randall F White, Medical Director, BC Psychosis Program, University of British Columbia Hospital; Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia [UBC], Vancouver, Canada
    • Harry Karlinsky, Clinical Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of British Columbia [UBC], Vancouver, Canada (moderator)

Child and Youth Mental Health Matters
"3 Conferences in One"

(You can click above for the meeting's Web pages.)

May 6-8, 2012

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Event sponsored by: University of British Columbia [UBC], Interprofessional Continuing Education [IPCE]

This meeting combines three conferences:
  1. First National Parental Mental Health Conference
  2. First International Young Carers Congress
  3. Third International World Congress on Children with Mental Illness

This conference brings together an interdisciplinary group of professionals working in the field of mental health with young people and parents and other stakeholders to share knowledge and experiences related to child and youth mental health.

This first ever gathering of this nature will provide a forum for focusing on the needs of young people and families as they struggle with issues related to mental health concerns across the generations. The overall goal of the concurrent conferences is help us develop a common language and understanding of the needs of young people and families. By bringing together people from diverse backgrounds we hope to enrich our collective knowledge of mental health strategies, best practices and the latest research in order to improve outcomes for young people and families. Our goal is to create at the conference a community of practice that spans the three themes where we can each share our knowledge and support while we discuss areas of mutual interest and concern.

Detail:

Following the main conference focused workshops will be conducted on November 17, 2012.

The term Developmental Disabilities [DD] refers to individuals with Intellectual Disability, Autism, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder and other Neurodevelopmental Syndromes. Children, youth and adults with DD are vulnerable to high rates of general health and mental health concerns. These concerns impact signii cantly on the affected individual’s quality of life as well as their families, caregivers and the community. This conference will provide educational and informative updates on psychiatric, behavioural and complex health components specific to individuals with DD, and showcase best practices in the field.

Specifically, the conference will focus on approaches to complex challenging behaviours, contributing medical issues and new developments in medication and behavioural treatment. In addition, the conference will address important health and mental health issues and will review common genetic syndromes such as Down Syndrome and Fragile X. This conference will engage health care providers and educators from a wide range of professional disciplines in knowledge transfer and interprofessional collaboration in order to maximize health and wellbeing so as to minimize disability and improve quality of life. The format will include plenaries, breakout sessions and poster sessions.

Objectives:

  • Promote best practices in physical and mental health for individuals with developmental disabilities
  • Recognize the multifactorial determinants of challenging behaviour
  • Recognize the role of traumatic experiences in understanding challenging behaviour
  • Maximize health and wellbeing in order to minimize disability and improve quality of life

About:

Contributing to the interdisciplinary approach in teaching and research at the University of California at Davis [UC Davis] Center for Neuroscience are Center faculty members, students, and collaborators who represent 13 academic departments and sections on the main campus and a number of other sites. These sites include the California Regional Primate Research Center, UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, the Veterans Administration Health Care System Outpatient Clinic in Martinez, other hospitals in northern California, and other universities worldwide.

Research at the Center is diverse, covering the major sub-disciplines and techniques in neuroscience and ranges from cellular and molecular neurobiology through systems and developmental neuroscience to studies of human perception, attention, memory, language, and the nature of consciousness. The Center places special emphasis on sensory physiology, on the molecular-genetic basis of neuronal function and its development, on the search for genetic markers in psychiatric diseases, in addition combining information obtained from different brain-imaging techniques, including fMRI, and ERPs, for the study of human cognition and the development of improved methods to treat brain injury and disease.
