|---|---|
About: | The Arizona Telemedicine Program is a multidisciplinary clinical program of The University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. The program was created in 1996 at the initiation of the Arizona legislature to establish pilot projects demonstrating the efficacy of telemedicine in delivering better health care to Arizona's medically underserved rural areas.
Specifically, the Arizona legislature funded an eight site Arizona Rural Telemedicine Network as a general appropriation to The University of Arizona Health Sciences Center's operating budget. The Arizona legislature defines telemedicine as the use of computers, video imaging, fiber optics and telecommunications for diagnosis and treatment of persons in rural, geographically isolated communities and state institutions. The program's goals are to demonstrate how telemedicine can improve rural health care in Arizona, particularly with the rising costs of health care leading to closure of critically needed hospitals and clinics in rural Arizona communities, and to offer a cost-effective alternative to expensive transportation and time delays for outside referrals from Arizona Department of Corrections institutions. |

Mental Health Film Series - Frames of Mind
(You can refer to the meeting's Web pages.) May 16, 2012 Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Sponsored by: University of British Columbia [UBC], Department of Psychiatry “Spider” (2002, directed by David Cronenberg) Dennis Clegg was nicknamed “Spider” during childhood because of a fascination with arachnids. After thirty years in a facility for the mentally ill, he is released to an East End London halfway house, where he receives little care or attention from the landlady. Unsupervised and off his medication, he starts revisiting his childhood haunts, and reliving his lonely working-class boyhood as the only son of a hard-drinking plumber and his subdued wife. Disturbing memories of his father’s attempts to replace his mother in the household with a blousy, blonde seductress confuse Spider and threaten his (perhaps delusion) grasp on the past, and he spirals into fresh madness. Presenters:

Child and Youth Mental Health Matters
"3 Conferences in One" (You can click above for the meeting's Web pages.) May 6-8, 2012 Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Event sponsored by: University of British Columbia [UBC], Interprofessional Continuing Education [IPCE] This meeting combines three conferences:
This conference brings together an interdisciplinary group of professionals working in the field of mental health with young people and parents and other stakeholders to share knowledge and experiences related to child and youth mental health. This first ever gathering of this nature will provide a forum for focusing on the needs of young people and families as they struggle with issues related to mental health concerns across the generations. The overall goal of the concurrent conferences is help us develop a common language and understanding of the needs of young people and families. By bringing together people from diverse backgrounds we hope to enrich our collective knowledge of mental health strategies, best practices and the latest research in order to improve outcomes for young people and families. Our goal is to create at the conference a community of practice that spans the three themes where we can each share our knowledge and support while we discuss areas of mutual interest and concern.
Note: The above is all the information that we currently have available in our database. To learn more about this event please go to its particular Web page. (A request: won't you be so nice as to mention these Web pages as your source when you ask about the above meeting?) |

Psychiatry faculty members engage in a wide variety of research programs, including inquiries into clinical processes; the causes, cures and neuropsychology of major psychiatric disorders; quality of care; medical education; and child and forensic psychiatry. Other topics under investigation include the nature and process of psychotherapy and ways in which "telemedicine" electronic telecommunications networks can be used to extend psychiatric care to rural and constrained patients. |
