Established in 1995 and pperating under the auspices of the School Mental Health Project the UCLA Center for Mental Health in Schools is one of the two national training and technical assistance centers focused on mental health in schools. The Center approaches mental health and psychosocial concerns from the broad perspective of addressing barriers to learning and promoting healthy development. Specific attention is given to polices and strategies that can counter fragmentation and enhance collaboration between school and community programs.

Integrated Substance Abuse Programs [ISAP] coordinates substance abuse research and treatment under authority of the University of California at Los Angeles [UCLA] Neuropsychiatric Institute & Hospital [NPI&H], which is a division of the UCLA Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, housed within the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. ISAP was formerly known as the Drug Abuse Research Center [DARC]. ISAP investigates psychosocial and epidemiological issues pertaining to drug use and conducts evaluations of interventions for drug dependence.

The Pacific Southwest Addiction Technology Transfer Center [PSATTC] at the University of California, San Diego, [UCSD] is one of a national network supported, in part, by the United States Department of Health and Human Services [DHHS] through its Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA] Center for Substance Abuse Treatment [CSAT] to assist service systems and institutions within California, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico develop capacities for addressing substance use disorders within populations they serve.

Objectives:

  • Promote effective intervention and treatment in both primary and specialty health care settings, criminal justice systems, and public social services in response to alcohol and other drug disorders
  • Assist institutions of higher education - through curriculum development and dissemination - deliver disciplinary-specific course work, eg, in counseling, medicine, nursing, psychology, and social work, reflecting scientifically-based and clinically relevant knowledge about alcohol and other drug addictions
  • Provide multidisciplinary continuing education and graduate curriculum enrichment through annual Summer Clinical Institute and faculty development seminars
  • Expose graduate students in health-related disciplines to clinical experiences reflective of the variety of publicly-supported treatment and recovery service settings throughout our service region
  • Enable staff of publicly-supported treatment and recovery programs to enhance knowledge and skills, especially in the service of traditionally underserved communities and populations
