The Udruženje psihijatara Srbije [UPS] is a non-profit organization.

Objectives:

  • Collect knowledge about the current state and needs of psychiatric services, and education opportunities in the field of psychiatry and mental health care in the Serb Republic
  • Improve the organization of mental health care in the community, based on scientific, humanistic and holistic principles, with special emphasis on the importance of territorial responsibility, continuity of care and interdisciplinary practice, and individualized treatment (patient-centered psychiatry)
  • Harmonize educational programs of graduate and postgraduate studies in psychiatry, including specialist training and continuing medical education
  • Promote ethical principles in psychiatric practice and all aspects of mental health care in the country
  • Work on destigmatization of people with mental disorders, and destigmatization of psychiatry and psychiatrists
  • Establish partnerships with governmental and intergovernmental organizations (World Health Organization, United Nations, World Bank, UNESCO, European Union), as well as NGOs in order to promote mental health
  • Improve communication, organizational and functional aspects of the Association and its cooperation with international associations of psychiatrists such as the World Psychiatric Association in their professional (organization of conferences, training, research activities and publications)
  • Advocate with the Government of Serbia and international organizations for the development and implementation of policies related to mental health, vocational training and research activities, as well as financial support, in accordance with existing health and economic needs related to the global burden of mental disorders

Active duty psychiatrists are also called upon to provide accurate counsel and guidance to line commands regarding the medical readiness and psychological fitness of their troops. In times of disaster Navy Psychiatry provides critical incident stress debriefing through the Special Psychiatric Rapid Intervention Team [SPRINT] during peace time or through Combat Stress Centers during armed conflict. The Adolescent Family Life [AFL] program, administered by the Office of Adolescent Pregnancy Programs [OAPP] was enacted in 1981 to fund:
  • Care demonstration projects
  • Prevention demonstration projects
  • Joint prevention and care demonstration projects
  • Research projects

Approximately 262 care and prevention demonstration projects and 65 research projects have been supported by the program since its inception. Care demonstration projects serve pregnant adolescents, adolescent parents, their infants, male partners and their families.

AFL care projects are required to provide comprehensive health, education, and social services, either directly or through partnerships with other community agencies, and to evaluate new approaches for implementation of these services.

AFL care projects are based within a variety of settings such as universities, hospitals, schools, public health departments or community agencies. Many provide home visiting services and all have partnerships with diverse community agencies.

Founded in 1976 as the International Association of Psychosocial Rehabilitation Services [IAPSRS], the re-named United States Psychiatric Rehabilitation Assocation [USPRA] brings together agencies, practitioners, families and consumers of psychosocial rehabilitation services. It acts as an advocate for community-oriented psychosocial rehabilitation.

The official publication of USPRA is Psychiatric Rehabilitation Journal.
