I have always been fascinated by diverse functions that the brain, built from basic neuronal building blocks, can control in any brain area whether it be motor, sensory, associative or autonomic.  As a biomedical engineer with knowledge in electrical circuits and programming, I have always been drawn to the theoretical aspects of neurophysiology. As part of master’s degree program I got an opportunity to work in the Santhakumar lab, where I used my engineering background to develop computational simulations and study how certain physiological parameters of neurons and their interactions may affect the behavior of networks with axonal reorganization patterns observed in epilepsy. I have continued as a research assistant in the same lab to augment my computational modeling skills with wet lab experience. I hope that the combined wet lab and theoretical modeling experience will give me a broad knowledge that will stand me in good stead for in my application to graduate school and an eventual career in bioengineering research in industry.
