As a research assistant in the Department of Neurology and Neurosciences at the New Jersey Medical School under the charge of Dr. Viji Santhakumar, I have gained basic science experience in recording from an electrophysiology field rig, immunohistochemistry, perfusion, preparation of hippocampal slices, stereotaxic surgery, and the use of technical tools related to data acquisition and analyses as in confocal and fluorescent microscopy and software applications like Clampfit, ImageJ, SigmaPlot, Neurolucida, and Stereo Investigator. Previous NSF-funded lab experiences have trained me in cell culturing, scientific imaging, and some computational modeling. My short-term aims include a potential project in physiological imaging using voltage-sensitive dyes to track in vitro electrophysiological phenomena in real-time. My educational background in applied math and biological sciences, including a deep-seated interest in scientific illustration and imaging, will optimistically supplement and enhance such a venture.
