UNIVERSITY OPHTHALMOLOGY CONSULTANTS

CASE OF THE MONTH

CASE #4

What part(s) of the body should be examined to complete the evaluation?

a) Skin, to rule out pseudoxanthoma elasticum

b) Blood, to rule out sickle cell disease
c) If indicated (not in this case), skull (or other) x-ray to rule out Paget’s disease

Skin examination discloses the typical papular appearance on flexural surfaces, eg, the back of the neck in these photographs. The results of the patient’s “sickle prep” were negative.
