Case: The patient is an 83-year-old white woman referred to our institute—where she received a neuro-ophthalmic consultation in February 2000—for management of temporal arteritis.

Past Ocular History:
Cataract extraction OS in August 1999
Presence of cataract OD
Unaware of any scotoma or sudden visual loss
Biopsy: The results of a biopsy were diagnostic for temporal arteritis.
History of Temporal Arteritis:
Headaches and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) in 1997
No temporal tenderness
No signs of anorexia
No jaw claudication
No fevers or chills
Results of biopsy performed in 1997 were positive for temporal arteritis
Patient was maintained on prednisone therapy for 2 to 3 years
   Therapy was discontinued once during this period, but headaches recurred
   Therapy was subsequently restarted
Prednisone was tapered to an alternate-day regimen, after which therapy was again discontinued
