UNIVERSITY OPHTHALMOLOGY CONSULTANTS

CASE OF THE MONTH

CASE #17

WHAT DOES THE SLO SHOW?

Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope OS: Focusing required a -14.8D lens. Fundus was visualized through clear media showing a scleral crescent, straightening of the retinal vessels, and a round, subretinal area of hyperpigmentation along the inferotemporal arcade. Microperimetry reveals the presence of a dense, wedge-shaped scotoma with a temporal base, extending between the nerve and the fovea. The scotoma corresponds to the area of retina irrigated by the cilioretinal artery, which seems to be present. Fixation is central and fairly stable with slight vertical extension.

What is the cause of the patient’s visual disturbance?
