CASE OF THE MONTH

CASE #9

Robert Fegan , MD

Case: A 38-year-old white woman with sudden onset of painless blurred vision in her left eye describes her condition as “gray spots in front of my left eye” that have persisted for several months. She recalled 2 similar episodes of blurred vision in her left eye. A year earlier, she had noticed a “gray spot in the center of my vision” that remained visible for a few seconds and was associated with a sharp headache and dizziness. Nine months earlier, the patient had noticed several gray spots in her left eye, visible also for only a few seconds. This episode was accompanied by numbness in the left cheek and pain on the left side of the neck.

The patient reported that she has had no past medical problems and is not taking any medication. She has a history of cigarette smoking, consuming 44 packs a year, on average. She has given birth to 2 healthy babies by cesarean section and has no history of miscarriage.
