NEURO-OPHTHALMOLOGY

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS?
  • Embolic CRAO (carotid atherosclerosis, cardiac valvular disease, intracardiac shunt, mural thrombus, cardiac arrhythmia, vascular dissection of the carotid artery, other unusual arterial problems such as fibromuscular disorder, Takayasu’s arteritis, Moya Moya disease, radiation-induced arterial damage)
  • Vasculitic CRAO (giant cell arteritis, SLE, syphilis)
  • Blood/metabolic dyscrasias (diabetes mellitus, hypertension, sickle cell disease, protein C/S disorders, hyperhomocystinemia)
  • Ocular ischemic syndrome
  • Ophthalmic artery occlusion
  • Migrainous CRAO
ASSESSMENT: Right acute central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO).

 

What workup should be undertaken?
